    Truly you are to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail.

    This insult comes out of the mouth of the prophet Jeremiah, not directed toward the people in his community who are throwing him in wells, and beating him up, and denying him food, but toward God. Jeremiah is so furious with God, who called him into this prophetic ministry in the first place, for what feels to him like God’s unpredictability. Sometimes God is very present, giving Jeremiah strength and courage, and then suddenly God seems utterly absent and unloving, leaving Jeremiah dry, empty, and alone. The image of a “deceitful brook” is vivid and powerful. I imagine a stream that one day is full to overflowing, bubbling over rocks and forming pools of clear, refreshing water, and then a short time later is suddenly just a quiet trickle over a dry streambed, more sand and rock than anything. Where did it go? Why so empty? You can see the watermarks on the rocks and soil of the stream’s walls, and are amazed that the water was once so high and deep. You wonder if it will ever return at all. And if you depend on that stream water for your life, then you are afraid and angry every time it dries up.

    Our relationship with God can be very much like this, how Jeremiah describes it. God can seem capricious and erratic in our lives and in the world. I take comfort from Jeremiah’s willingness to have it out with God, to let himself be really angry and tell God about it. To call God names, and accuse God. To me, this is robust, mature faith. It is a faith in constant conversation with God. If we only ever speak to God on Sundays through prescribed prayers, or in a moment of crisis believe that a God we do not relate to on a daily basis will magically fix what is wrong, then God will seem ineffectual, slow, and lacking.

    God never abandons us, but works in hidden ways we cannot see. Take heart from Jeremiah, the prophet who loves God so much that he will not let God go without a fight, who speaks to God from the deepest well of his heart, and does not hold anything back.

    In both of our readings for this Sunday, Isaiah 51:1-3 and Romans 12:1-8, we hear an invitation to look back at the source of our life- in Isaiah, the source is “the rock from which you were hewn” Abraham and Sarah, who were the human parents of God's people; in Romans, Paul points to Christ, the body of whom we are now a part and each have an essential function. We belong to God. We belong to one another.

    After being reminded of our origins and our true home, God’s promises are reiterated and reimagined for a new time. For Isaiah, it was a time of painful exile, and for the churches in Rome to whom Paul was writing, it was a time of being an underground movement facing external persecution and internal division.

    Exile and division are not unfamiliar to us in 2026. This week I am thinking especially of the literal exile and division caused by recent earthquakes in Venezuela, Colombia, Japan and Indonesia, the sudden reality of having lost both home and members of one’s community. I am thinking about the rupture to come as the current administration removes safeguards and regulations that have allowed Head Start programs to be life-saving and life-giving for millions of kids from low income families, whether you live in a red state or a blue state. And I’m thinking about a spate of gun deaths in recent days, and the violent disruption of a shabbat service at Central Synagogue in NYC.

    Exile and division. And somehow, God is still speaking to us of God’s promises, and of our belonging to one another, and what we must do is reimagine what those promises can look like today.

    What does being diverse members of one Body mean and look like in this very moment? What do God’s promises of restoration, beauty, comfort and homecoming mean in our world, so full of loneliness and suspicion? It is our job to imagine, and then to put ourselves out there to help create it. If we fail, we fail, and then next time we can fail better, and keep going, keep showing up. It’s in the showing up for each other and the world that we grow in faith, hope and love, and are transformed.
